Good afternoon,
Now that I’m able to carve out a bit more time to focus on my art practice, I thought it would be nice to send the odd newsletter out for those who would like to stay in the loop with what’s next for me.
After becoming a member of the Mahurangi Artist Network, I’ve also decided to become a member of the Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa, which is a great gallery to be involved with. I’m going to give myself the challenge of creating a new work for their Members Merit Awards, which takes place in August. So, I’ll have seven weeks to get a piece together, which is a great goal.
As well as the Merit Award, they also have a Members Matariki Exhibition, which takes place at the end of June. I submitted my piece, ‘Unity’, for the exhibition, which I thought fits quite well within the theme.
Unity

Unity is a three-piece artwork crafted from reclaimed Rimu and Matai. It symbolises the coming together of people, standing strong, supporting one another, and walking tall with purpose and pride.
The work encourages us to be present in the moment and appreciate the small things in life that often go unnoticed. It reflects the importance of connection, community, and shared experiences.
Unity is also a celebration of our natural environment. Through the reuse and repurposing of these timbers, the artwork expresses gratitude for nature and acknowledges the value of giving new life to materials that might otherwise be discarded. In doing so, it highlights the importance of sustainability, respect for the land, and caring for the world around us.
Together, these elements create a work that speaks to the relationship between people, place, and the environment.
More updates from my studio
I can’t quite explain what a great feeling it is to have a space to create in again, it honestly feels like christmas. It will no doubt take some time to get back in to the groove, but good things take time.
