The Ruapuke House
This sculpture is inspired by a small abandoned house in Ruapuke, Waikato, which I first visited five years ago. The house sits on a hill within the landscape and prompted questions about who once lived there and how it came to be abandoned.
The sculpture references the form and material qualities of this structure. Weathered surfaces and layered timbers reflect the physical characteristics of the house. Some of the materials used in the work have been sourced directly from the Ruapuke house itself.
The Ruapuke House draws attention to the relationship between architecture, memory, and place.
