The sculpture aims to raise awareness around the importance of sustainability, our natural environment, and the quality of New Zealand’s historic building materials and traditional craftsmanship — emphasising the lost connection between nature and modern buildings.
I have created a micro version of a traditional villa or bungalow which will represent and symbolise the history of our New Zealand homes. The building is site-specific to the homes in Devonport, a suburb that is renowned for its old historic buildings.
Auckland is fast becoming more and more gentrified, but suburbs like Devonport have held its history with a plethora of restored and protected homes, dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.
